The Climate and Ecosystems Team of Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy and the Centre for Parliamentary Studies at the National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal, organised a discussion on “Parliamentary Procedures in Environmental Matters” on 25th September at NLIU campus. The event featured two technical sessions.
The first session, led by Debadityo Sinha delved into the understanding of “Forest” and its and its regulatory evolution in India. The session emphasised that understanding of ecosystems is critical for any environmental matter.
The second technical session, led by Shashank Pandey, explored intricacies of the parliamentary process and its application in advancing environmental issues. This was further supported by sharing insights from the team’s periodic publication- “The Green Hour”.
Following the sessions, the students participated in a parliamentary debate exercise on the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Bill, 2023, allowing them to simulate how parliamentary tools can influence legislative debates on critical environmental issues.
The event aimed to emphasise the significance of legislative accountability in environmental governance and to empower students with the knowledge of various parliamentary interventions that can safeguard environmental and other social issues.
