Responding to the 2026/27 'Super' El Niño: A Call to Ecologists

A group of ecologists in India (several of whom are here on Grove) have come together to sound a warning and a call to action.

The approaching 2026/27 El Niño is predicted to be the most extreme such event in 100 years (perhaps longer) – bringing exceptional climatic conditions to ecosystems in India. As ecologists, we need to document and understand the effects of such an event on the natural world and connected social systems.

Recognising this, a collective of ecological researchers and practitioners have put out a call to fellow ecologists in India to respond by strengthening and expanding our research and monitoring efforts in order to better understand the effects of extreme climate events. You can read the full text of the call here:

Documenting, monitoring, and studying the effects of the El Niño is not enough - but it’s the least we should be doing.
