Public Hearing on Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project

Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has scheduled the Environmental Public Hearing for the Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project.

Reported scale of impact: ~2,000 MW PSP; estimates of tree felling and land diversion range from ~15,000 trees and ~142.76 hectares / ~350 acres (different reports list forest & non-forest breakup). KPCL claims most work underground and limited surface disturbance.

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project (PSP) fails at the most basic level of credibility. It demonstrates glaring omissions in addressing critical environmental, social, and cumulative impacts - many of which are not merely inadequately covered but entirely absent. For a 2,000 MW project located in the evergreen forests of the Sharavathi Lion-Tailed Macaque Wildlife Sanctuary, home to numerous endangered species, the scope is shockingly superficial. Instead of a rigorous, site-specific assessment, the document reads like a recycled template—sections lifted from generic literature, and at times resembling a tourist brochure rather than a scientific study.

Requesting concerned citizens to attend and formally convey their message at one of the offline public hearing:
On 16th September 2025 from 9:00AM at Kargal - KPCL Officials Recreational Club
On 18th September 2025 from 9:00AM at Gerusoppa - Gutti Kannika Parameshwari Temple

It’s mandatory to bring your photo ID card for the event.

I will be personally attending the event at Gerusoppa - Honavar.
Feel free to reply to this thread or DM on any queries.

Hi Sandeep. Thank you for your dedication with the protest against this infra project.
I would like to know if there has been any recent update regarding this project? Specifically, is there any talks regarding the fact that there is no SIA in this project?

Thank You

Hi Sarthak,

High court has stayed the project saying that no activity should happen. From what I have heard from others, still forest department entered the area and counting trees based on the request of state government wildlife board to minimise the trees. Few people are planning to file the evidence in court on 1st October hearing, stating the violation of order.

But NIAS of Government of Karnataka has given a report stating this project must happen.
