Rural people in Karnataka coexist with elephants and tigers. Who do we coexist with in Bengaluru?
India is densely populated, with 400+ people/km2, alongside two-thirds of the world’s Asian elephants and three-fourths of the world’s tigers. Unlike anywhere else in the world, the number of humans, elephants, tigers, rhinos, and lions has all doubled in the last few decades. Karnataka has the largest elephant population in India.
A herd of Lantana elephants are travelling around the world celebrating India’s unique coexistence story!
This wildlife week, let us celebrate the local rural people who coexist with wildlife, while also working towards more urban biodiversity and green space in Bengaluru, creating healthier environments for ourselves!
