The Climate and Ecosystems Team at Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy will be the knowledge partner for the upcoming “International Conference on Rivers” being hosted by Vinayaka Mission’s Law School (VMLS) Chennai from 19th to 20th October 2024.
The conference aims to encourage interdisciplinary discussion on socio legal aspects of river governance, management and sustainable use.

The Climate and Ecosystems Team at Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy was the knowledge partner of the International Conference on Rivers being organised by Vinayak Mission Law School Chennai.
The conference was attended by Shashank Pandey on behalf of the team wherein he was the Chair of one of the panels for adjudging the paper presentation.
The team also structured the panel discussion titled “Floods and Ecosystems: Sustainable Strategies for Integrated Management” wherein Shashank presented the legal and policy perspective issues on the topic. The panel was Chaired by Prof Najeed Naved (VMLS) and included panelist - Mr Tarun Nair (Wildlife Conservation Trust) and Dr Jagdish Krishnaswamy (Dean, Scroll.of Environment and Sustainability). The panel discussion lasted for 1:30 hrs and saw participation of students and delegated of the conference (approx 90-100 in strength).
The panel discussion sought to foster collaboration among scientists, policymakers, urban planners, and community leaders to develop sustainable strategies that address both flood risk and ecosystem health. The integrated approach discussed during the panel provided actionable insights and policy recommendations for managing floods while enhancing ecosystem resilience. The perspectives related to the legal status of rivers, practice of embankment of rivers and effectivity of hydroelectric projects in different areas were also discussed.
