The Climate Brief

The Climate Brief is an explainer of recent climate news aimed at taking information about climate change to more people. It will be a short video that picks up 3 climate news stories from recent times, breaks them down in a jargon free manner and highlights why the news is relevant to a lay person.

Objective/ Goal:

Our objective is to take climate news to people outside the ‘climate bubble’ i.e. people who are already interested in climate change/ work in the field/ are conscious about living a sustainable lifestyle. The hope is that being better informed is the first step in being able to make better choices and make better decisions.

Most people today don’t read much climate news.
This happens mainly because:

  • Reach and accessibility - In the world of algorithmic feeds, one is most likely not going to see climate news stories in their feeds on social media/ google unless one is already looking for/ interested in them.
  • Too much jargon - The way a lot of environmental/ climate news is presented is full of technical terms and scientific jargon and so it may not make a lot of sense to a lay person. E.g. a lot of people outside the ‘climate world’ may not understand what GHG emissions are, what the Paris agreement is or even what net zero means. So even if someone comes across a climate story, they are not interested in reading it.
  • Too much doom and gloom - Environment and climate stories often get presented with a lot of doom and gloom that may drive people to feeling helpless and disconnect from reading up further on the topic.

We will work on addressing the challenges outlined above.
