Innovative Water Management at Devanahalli: A Step Towards Sustainability

At Biome Environmental Trust, we are excited to share the story of a successful collaboration between Biome, Boson Whitewater, and the Devanahalli Municipality, supported by Rotary International and ZEISS India CSR Funds, to address water scarcity in Devanahalli, a fast-growing town near Bengaluru.

The project reimagines water as a circular resource by turning treated wastewater into high-quality potable water that meets BIS-10500 drinking water standards. This initiative benefits Devanahalli’s residents by providing 7,00,000 litres/day of drinking water, a critical resource for a semi-urban town facing challenges due to rapid urbanization and groundwater depletion.

How It Works:

:one: Rejuvenating Local Resources:
Water from Sihineeru Kere - receiving treated wastewater from HN valley project, and diluted rainwater - is recharged through a network of shallow filter borewells. The percolated water is then treated using Boson Whitewater’s advanced technology, ensuring it is safe for consumption.

:two: Methods of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) and Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT)
This initiative is not just about water treatment but about demonstrating how local groundwater and treated wastewater can support a town’s water needs sustainably. Biome and IISc have collaborated to study managed aquifer recharge and soil aquifer treatment in the Devanahalli demonstration, developing principles for operations, management, and replication.

:three: Scalable Model for other parts of Karnataka
Devanahalli serves as a Living Lab, showcasing how partnerships between communities, governments, and experts can create replicable models for towns and cities across India. It has hosted a range of stakeholders, including municipal officials, Panchayat members, researchers, and students. It serves as a learning hub for professionals from the Devanahalli Town Municipal Council and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, focusing on Managed Aquifer Recharge, Soil Aquifer Treatment, and aquifer systems to promote sustainable water management. The Lab fosters cross-sector collaborations, bridging academic research with practical implementation, empowering stakeholders to adopt sustainable water practices.

This initiative is part of our broader commitment to shallow aquifer management, rejuvenating traditional wells, and promoting sustainable water use. It aligns with our vision of building climate-resilient cities by integrating local water resources into urban water supply systems.
