Economic Valuation of Land Commons in Odisha

A brief, jointly developed by the Foundation for Ecological Security (FES), International Food
Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)
, Federation University, Australia, and Common Ground,
highlights the need for sustainable management of these lands to safeguard their ecological and
economic contributions.

Covering over 5 million hectares, these shared resources—including forests, pastures, and
uncultivated lands—play a crucial role in supporting livelihoods and enhancing climate resilience
in a state heavily reliant on agriculture and natural resources.

In November - December 2024, Common Ground partners Asar Social Impact Advisors shared a press release in English and Odia, based on the policy brief “Economic Valuation of Land Commons in Odisha”, which estimates the annual value of ecosystem services provided by Odisha’s land commons at INR 36,890 crore.

The press release was covered widely by the media with 14 stories published in leading
national and regional outlets, including The Statesman, The Hindu, and Sambad.
