Climate Narrative Hub: Amplifying Stories of Local Rural Economies

Hello! Greetings from the Climate Narrative Hub.

Since the last time we interacted, the conversation around ‘Aatmanirbharta’ or self-reliance has increased - whether in media or in our discussions - especially in light of the on-going West Asia Conflict.

Across the Rainmatter ecosystem, there are several partners already working with communities to strengthen local economies by promoting local production and consumption, circular economies, and community-led enterprises. But we’ve often found ourselves asking: how can these stories reach more people? And how can they inspire more people within our villages to take these ideas forward?

The Climate Narrative Hub has, over the past three months, been working to amplify stories of communities building local economies rooted in their own ecological contexts. Through creator-led storytelling, we’ve collaborated with 17 creators across Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, UP (and the list is only growing!) to bring examples of local resilience to spark action. What we’ve realised - The best way to inspire people is to actually SHOW them that it’s possible through other stories around them already doing it. So far, we’ve created 26 reels in Bundeli, Hindi, Kannada, and Tamil.

Here are our top 5 reels:

This reel highlighted a rural enterprise in Karnataka which is employing people within the village to create naturally dyed fabrics. A short reel showcasing the activity in the enterprise actually got a lot of attention - people began enquiring on HOW they can purchase the products and even asked for the address to visit it in person.

The reel explored how villages that once processed their own oils and prepared essentials locally have increasingly become dependent on urban businesses for everyday products. It also highlighted the opportunities that village-level food processing units could create, from local employment to retaining economic value within communities. The reel had reached over 7 lakh people across platforms. It also generated over 1000+ comments, many asking how food processing units could be started in their own villages.

In Tenkasi, a farmer-led collective is transforming banana stem waste into eco-friendly handcrafted products through banana fibre extraction. Instead of discarding them, it’s used to make baskets, utility items - so it’s an additional source of income for farmers AND generates local employment opportunities, especially for women. Over appreciation for the reel, there were several comments asking practical questions about how and where banana stem waste could be sold, signalling genuine interest in replication.

In this skit format, a MP-based creator Pushpa Patel asks - why should communities step outside to purchase the very vegetables, milk, and ghee that they produce and send to cities? When money circulates within villages, it can strengthen local economies, support producers, and reduce dependence on external markets.

This reel explores how goats can be much more than a source of manure or livestock assets. From nutrient-rich manure and premium milk to artisanal products like cheese and soaps, it shows how this can become a thriving rural enterprise giving farmers multiple streams of income.

Do have a look at the reels and let us know what you think - If you’d like to build stronger public narratives around the issues you’re working on, we’d love to collaborate.
