SNS 24.0

Sense N Sensibility is a lecture series that engages critical questions at the intersection of architecture and social responsibility. The upcoming 24th edition, to be held on 13th August 2026, is titled Designing What Matters: People First. Better Places. Shared Futures. It explores how architecture can move beyond buildings to create meaningful, inclusive, and people-centred environments.

The session brings together Ar. Harshad Bhatia and Ar. Ruturaj Parikh for a conversation on what it means to design with people at the centre of every decision. Through dialogue and discussion, the speakers will examine how architecture can respond to real human needs, everyday contexts, and long-term collective wellbeing. The lecture will introduce students to ways of thinking about design that prioritise usability, inclusivity, and social impact alongside aesthetics and function.

Join us for a conversation that puts people back at the centre of design, and discover how better places begin with better intentions.

Snap Studio | BAC Prompt 05: Good Jugaad Solutions

Walk through any Indian street, and you will find design happening in real time. A bamboo pole holding up a construction site. A tarpaulin sheet became the market’s roof. A bicycle carrying a shopkeeper’s entire inventory. Nobody called these “innovations” as they are just jugaad, the quiet, everyday problem-solving that keeps cities running.

Prompt 05 asks you to identify one jugaad solution in your city, town, or village that genuinely makes someone’s life easier. Document it. Then redesign it to make it safer, more durable, more affordable, and easy for others to replicate.

Most design conversations start with a blank page. This one starts with something that already works. The prompt is asking you to notice, respect, and improve. That’s a harder, more honest kind of design thinking, and it’s exactly the instinct this series is built to sharpen.

Everyday jugaad rarely announces itself as a solution. Take rooftop sprinklers, a common sight in Indian summers, used to cool interior spaces by keeping the roof surface wet through the hottest hours. It runs on a constant supply of water, often in cities where water is already scarce. This is exactly where designers can be useful, by finding a version of the same answer: a reflective roof coating, a mosaic layer, a shaded pergola, that solves for heat without spending water to do it.

It also opens the door wide. You don’t need an architecture degree to spot a good jugaad; you need eyes open on your commute. That’s why this prompt is especially worth bringing into classrooms, shops, and community groups: the observation is available to everyone, and so is the redesign.

Good design doesn’t always need a bigger budget. Sometimes it just needs someone to look at what’s already there, making it a little safer, a little sturdier, and a lot easier to pass on.

Post-event session of PMP 1.0

Three days, one purpose: helping faculty grow as educators and mentors for the next generation of architects.

Day 1 opened with the journey of an architect who found his niche not through grand plans, but through observation and mindful travel, a reminder of how small moments shape a creative career. The day’s highlight was an immersion visit to a specialised cancer hospital. For faculty, it was a lesson in the empathy that healthcare architecture demands. It was a reminder of how much more powerful teaching becomes with real, on-ground examples.

Day 2 focus shifted from personal reflection to student enablement. The faculty discussed about guiding students through real-world challenges and internship struggles, and bridging the gap between academia and practice. The day closed with plans to keep the momentum going: not a one-time event, but the start of an ongoing faculty community built on collaboration and shared learning.

The final day (Day 3) tied it all together with a mix of learning, unlearning, and looking ahead. A panel on alternative practices offered fresh perspectives on architecture beyond conventional paths. The programme closed with an empowering session by Prof. Amruta, Director at Nehru College, on the future of architectural education.

Every session across the three days left the faculty with something valuable to take back to their classrooms. PMP 1.0 was not just a programme; it was the start of a community that is here to stay.

SNS 24.0 | Designing What Matters

What does it mean to design what truly matters?

On 13 August 2026, the 24th edition of Sense N Sensibility (SNS 24.0) brought together diverse perspectives under the theme “Designing an Inclusive India”, exploring how architecture and design can place people, communities and context at the centre of the built environment.

Featuring Ar. Harshad Bhatia, Distinguished Professor of Ekistics and Design Chair at VESCOA, and Ar. Ruturaj Parikh, Founder and Director of Matter, the session “Designing What Matters - People First. Better Places. Shared Futures" opened up a meaningful conversation around accessibility, responsibility, context, community and the future of design.

Through their presentations and the conversation that followed, the speakers encouraged participants to look beyond architecture as the making of physical spaces and towards design as a way of understanding people, responding to their needs and shaping more equitable places.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, allowing students and participants to question, reflect and connect with the ideas shared. Because designing what matters begins with understanding who and what we are designing for.

Participatory workshops

As part of Ethos Foundation’s Mainstreaming Responsible Design initiative, a Participatory Feedback Session was conducted with Aura Architecture for their ongoing 120-acre integrated plotted township project in Hisar, Haryana. The session brought together the architects, faculty, architecture and interior design students, volunteers and members of the project team to examine the developing township through the lens of everyday movement, people, place and community.

The session focused on an on-ground mapping exercise, with participants observing and documenting the existing context around the project, including movement patterns, places of gathering, local activities, access routes, community interactions and significant landmarks. Students and faculty worked alongside the architects to record observations through conversations, sketches, photographs and annotated maps, creating a layer of ground-level information that can sit alongside the formal masterplan.

The exercise also created an opportunity for students and young professionals to engage directly with a large-scale project under construction and to understand how decisions about infrastructure, mobility, public spaces, and neighbourhood planning translate from drawings to the ground. For Aura Architecture, the session offered an opportunity to revisit the project through observations beyond the conventional site and planning data, and to reflect on how the future township can respond to the people and context around it.

The session forms part of Ethos Foundation’s ongoing effort to document practical examples of participatory design and explore how architectural practices can open their design processes to wider conversations with communities, students and allied stakeholders.

Launching BAC Snap Studio I Prompt 06 — “Design For the Hands That Build”

We are excited to share the upcoming launch of Prompt 06, the final challenge in our Snap Studio series, anchored within our ShramA action area. The prompt is releasing on 31st August, 2026.

The Challenge:

“Design For the Hands That Build”, invites participants to design a product, system, space, or service that meaningfully improves the daily lives of construction workers on-site.

Prompt 06 is about recognising the people who build the homes, offices, schools, and cities we live in, yet are often left with temporary, unsafe, and undignified living and working conditions themselves. The underlying goal is to show that design’s responsibility extends to the hands that build. The solutions should be practical, affordable, and easy to deploy.

This is the last prompt in the Snap Studio series, which turns the lens toward the people whose work makes every other space possible. The prompt is open to everyone. If you work with school children, shopkeepers, or other community networks, please help spread the word.

Participatory workshops - Firozabad Edition

Participatory design is a democratic process: designing with people rather than for them, where the people who inhabit a space are treated as collaborators in shaping it, not just an audience for the final result.

On 24th August, the design team held a Participatory Design Feedback Session in Firozabad, in collaboration with Node Urban Lab, led by Ar. Rahul Jadon. Students and faculty from Dayalbagh Educational Institute joined as volunteers.

This was the 5th session in the series, and it brought together the design team, students, local stakeholders, and members of Firozabad’s glass-making community to look at the proposed Glass Museum through the people, practices, and places that shape the city. Through conversations, mapping, and on-ground observation, participants traced Firozabad’s relationship with glassmaking.

The exercise pushed the team to see the museum as a space that connects Firozabad’s craft heritage to its living community and contemporary identity. Conversations with local glassmakers showed how closely the craft is tied to family trade and daily life. Much of this knowledge is passed down at home and often stays invisible to anyone outside the workshops. Mapping exercises showed that residents move through and remember the city differently than how it looks on a plan. Their sense of the city is shaped by workshops, kilns, and years of shared work.

These insights now inform the design reflection, shaping how the museum can represent the city while staying rooted in the people and knowledge systems that built it.

Happy International Literacy Day!

Literacy usually means the ability to read and write. But another form of literacy shapes our daily lives just as much: the ability to understand design.

From the layout of a classroom to the width of a footpath or the placement of a window, spatial decisions constantly influence how we move, interact, and feel. Yet design is often treated as the exclusive domain of architects, creating a divide between those who shape our environments and those who inhabit them.

Being design-literate doesn’t require becoming an architect. It simply means learning to observe a space, questioning why it works—or doesn’t—and recognising how intentional design impacts everyday life.

This vision drives SVa-Des (See Value in Design), an Ethos Foundation initiative integrating design thinking into schools across India. Launched on December 4, 2025, with support from the Indian Institute of Architects, the Council of Architecture, and the Rainmatter Foundation, the movement is already building momentum across the country:

- 122+ schools
- 800+ students
- 40+ catalysts
- 20+ cities

At its heart, design literacy is about asking simple questions: Who is this space designed for? Who might be left out? How could it work better?

This International Literacy Day, it is time to expand our definition of literacy—by learning to understand, critique, and help shape the spaces we inhabit every day.

Responsible Design Repository

What does responsible design look like in practice?

Responsible design is a way of practising architecture and design that stays accountable to the people who inhabit a space, the communities around it, local culture, and the environment that sustains it all. It shows up in the choices practices make long before a building is complete—in how a site is read, how materials are sourced, how a community is consulted, and how a design continues to serve its context well after handover.

To support this shift, we are building a growing, open-access repository of projects and practices that respond meaningfully to these concerns.

This repository exists to reshape the narrative around architectural success. By documenting real-world examples, we aim to:

- Build Critical Awareness: Highlight how everyday architectural choices directly impact ecosystems and localised socio-economic dynamics.
- Inform the Next Generation: Serve as a practical case-study library for students and aspiring architects, offering concrete alternatives to standard top-down design models.
- Refocus Industry Values: Elevate practices rooted in community agency, spatial justice, and long-term stewardship rather than short-term aesthetics or monumental form.

If your practice has undertaken work that reflects a socially or environmentally responsible approach, we invite you to submit your project for recognition.

Documenting these methodologies allows the wider design community to learn from what is already working on the ground, giving greater visibility to the work quietly shaping a more responsible built environment.

Submit your work. Be part of the repository.[Arcause Awards 2026 — Ethos Foundation](https://ethosfoundation.in/arcauseawards26/)

Arcause Awards 2026 | The Zenith: Arcause Academic Leader Award

Integrating responsible design—such as universal accessibility, sustainability, empathy, and social equity—into the curriculum is vital for shaping the next generation of architects and designers. Rather than viewing design solely through an aesthetic lens, educators who champion responsible design teach students to create spaces and systems that are inclusive, functional, and deeply attuned to human and environmental needs. This approach bridges theory with real-world impact, ensuring that future professionals build a more equitable, sustainable, and socially conscious world.

To celebrate and honour these exceptional educators who are transforming design education, we are proud to present the Arcause Awards Educators Recognition program.

This comprehensive awards structure honours leaders and innovators across three distinct categories:

### Arcause Catalyst for Responsible Change

The Arcause Catalyst for Responsible Change recognises students/young architects/students coordinators from Arcause Clubs who take initiative to address social, environmental, and community-related challenges through architecture and design. The category celebrates individuals who move beyond academic requirements to develop projects, organise activities, engage with communities, and create opportunities for meaningful learning and action.

From sustainability and inclusive design to cultural heritage, community participation, and resource-conscious practices, the recognised initiatives reflect the diverse ways in which students are contributing to a more responsible built environment. Their work demonstrates the importance of curiosity, collaboration, empathy, and sustained action in creating positive change.

We are pleased to announce the selected recipients and celebrate their efforts to make architecture a more socially conscious, inclusive, and environmentally responsible practice.

**SNS 25.0**

Sense N Sensibility is a lecture series that engages critical questions at the intersection of architecture, design, and the wider social world. The 25th edition, Designing Opportunities, brings the conversation towards the many possibilities that can emerge from a design education and career.

The session features Ar. Gita Balakrishnan, who will reflect on Ethos’ journey and the experiences, choices, and turning points that have shaped the organisation and the people connected to it. Through stories and anecdotes from across the Ethos ecosystem, the conversation explored how careers can evolve through exploration, experimentation, and unexpected opportunities.

The session also brought together diverse career pathways emerging from design education, from architectural practice and research to media, materials, technology, entrepreneurship, community initiatives, and other allied fields. It encouraged students and young architects to look beyond a conventional definition of an architectural career and consider how their skills, interests, and experiences can open up different professional possibilities.

This conversation explores the many directions a design education can lead and discover how curiosity, choices, experimentation, and the opportunities we encounter along the way.

**Designing Opportunities: Where Can Your Degree Take You?**

Held on 29 September 2026, the latest edition of Sense N Sensibility (SNS 25.0) brought together students, educators, and young professionals from architecture and allied design fields to explore the many possibilities that emerge from a design education.

Organised in collaboration with ACEDGE and Saint-Gobain as part of a Saint-Gobain Ecosystem Building Initiative, the session was titled _“Designing Opportunities: Where Can Your Degree Take You?”_. The conversation explored how an architecture degree can lead to diverse professional journeys well beyond conventional architectural practice.

Ar. Gita Balakrishnan, Founder of Ethos, led the discussion by guiding the audience through stories, experiences, choices, and turning points from across the Ethos ecosystem. Her insights highlighted how professional pathways are shaped through ongoing exploration, experimentation, and evolving interests.

Alumni from the Ethos ecosystem joined the session to share their experience in varied fields. Together, they showed how skills developed through design education can translate across disciplines. The session also drew 29 broadcasting institutions, with over 50 student registrations per college. The session received over 1200+ registrations.

The discussion ultimately shifted the idea of an architecture degree from being an endpoint to being a starting point. It inspired students to look beyond predefined career paths and recognise that their education can provide a foundation for entering different fields, building new skills, and responding to opportunities as they emerge. SNS 25.0 was less about answering what one should do after an architecture degree, and more about opening up the question of what is possible.
