# Building Regional Climate Vocabulary: Glossaries in Marathi, Bengali, and Tamil

Over the last 2 years, we have developed three regional climate glossaries – Marathi, Bengali, and Tamil – to help democratise climate knowledge across local contexts.

Technical climate terminology often creates an invisible barrier to localised governance and public participation. These glossaries were designed to bridge the gap between complex scientific jargon and everyday regional usage, fostering grounded climate literacy so that citizens, educators, and local policy makers/advisors can actively take ownership of climate discourse.

The Tamil glossary was developed in partnership with the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC), while the Marathi and Bengali resources were shaped alongside regional stakeholders, educators, and domain experts. We view these glossaries not as static documents, but as foundational tools. By working alongside government partners and regional allies, our hope is to help seed a standardised, culturally relevant climate vocabulary into state-level policymaking, local media newsrooms, ULBs, and grassroots organisations.
