India Climate Extremes Index (September 2026)

Dr M. Rajeevan, former Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences and a co-author, approached us to take forward a study in the International Journal of Climatology by scientists at IMD, NCMRWF and Atria University. The study combined seven hazards, among them daytime heat, humid heat, heatwave severity and drought, into a single India Climate Extremes Index built on 52 years of IMD observations. Because the dominant hazard differs from region to region, we wrote a national note and regional notes that each carried a different finding: the heat-epicentre angle for Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, the drying angle for Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and the heavy-rain and dry-spell swings for the North-East. All of them were author-reviewed before PTI carried the national story on release day.

The effort landed 123 stories across 7 languages and 15 states and union territories, with 64 in print, 52 online and 7 on social and video platforms, for an estimated reach of around 70 million. High points included a front-page story in The Telegraph built on an interview with Dr Rajeevan and a Page 1 anchor in Lokmat Times. Eenadu made the finding its Page 1 lead across Andhra Pradesh, and Nava Telangana and Niyamiya Barta also ran it on their front pages. Sixteen Odia dailies carried it in the largest single regional wave of the series.
