Extreme heat and adverse pregnancy outcomes (July 2026)

We next took up the study by Vineetha Vincent of the University of Queensland–IIT Delhi Academy of Research and Prof Sagnik Dey of IIT Delhi, published in Environmental Research Communications. Drawing on 209,266 births across 707 districts from the National Family Health Survey, it found that each additional run of extreme-heat days during pregnancy raised the risk of low birth weight, and that the risk fell hardest on the poorest and most undernourished mothers. Working from the paper with the research team, we wrote a national note alongside state notes for Punjab, urban Maharashtra, the semi-arid interior of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, West Bengal and the North-East, each surfacing the angle most relevant to its readers. All the notes were author-reviewed before release, and wire pickup through PTI, UNI and IANS widened the spread in English and Hindi.

The outreach ran through one of the most crowded national news cycles of the year and still landed 102 stories across 8 languages and more than 10 states and union territories, three-quarters of them in regional print, for an estimated reach of over 40 million. High points included the New Indian Express across its all-India editions, Dainik Bhaskar in Delhi, Sakshi and Eenadu in the Telugu states, a dozen Marathi dailies including Saamana, Pudhari and Maharashtra Times, a front-page placement in Business Diary, and the Times of India in Kolkata.
